As a digital agency specialising in .NET web design and development we were very keen to read about our CMS partner Umbraco, and the latest release of their open source CMS solution.
Before launching into the improvements made to this version, let’s just take a moment to remind ourselves of what an open source CMS solution is and why, on occasions it may prove more beneficial to an organisation than that of a closed source solution.
The main difference is that open source platforms are built with source code made available to a whole community of developers meaning information is usually easy to find with issues being vetted and solved by a large number of people. Advantages of an open source solution are plentiful but the real benefit comes from the fact that it gets closer to what the user wants because it's the user who has a hand in developing it to their needs. Customising the software to meet requirements is simply a case of modifying it to add extra functionality.
This is exactly what led to the release of Umbraco version 7.7 with a pull request (a method of submitting contributions) from one of Umbraco's Gold Partners who introduced support for managing users in groups. This coupled with contributions from other partners led to a whole new user management section.
Here's a great video from Umbraco's Niels Hartvig showing the great improvements made to this new User section.
Overall, not only is Umbraco a good, solid platform for us to create some wonderful solutions on, it's also fully supported by Umbraco HQ combining the best of both worlds - an Open Source, community driven platform with commercial grade support. And now you can enjoy this friendly CMS in the Cloud giving you all-in-one Azure hosting.
