72% of buyers turn to Google while in the research stage*
As if we haven’t had enough to contend with recently in the ever evolving Google algorithm index, news reaches us of yet another change to contend with on the horizon.
Google’s Webmaster Trends Analyst Gary Illyes, who was speaking at Pubcon last week, stated that Google will create a separate mobile index within the next few months.
Having had to deal with Penguin 4.0, Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) and various other changes, this next iteration it seems will be quite far reaching.
So, after years of impressing on individuals and organisations on the need to focus on mobile, the new index will be Google’s ‘primary’ index. This means what it says. Google will focus on this index and the broader desktop will be eventually superseded by this new mobile index.
Therefore the desktop index will not be kept as up to date as the mobile one.
It is no surprise that Google is moving this way. The overwhelming data showing the growth of mobile and non-desktop search means that this index is likely to launch very soon.
The growth of in-home devices like Nest, Apple TV and Amazon devices means that voice search will also have played a part in this shift. Over 50% of searches are mobile. This will only grow and become dominant next year and beyond.
AMP becomes prominent
